What are respiratory illness levels by state?
For the week ending October 24, 2026, overall respiratory illness activity was very low in California and New York and low in Texas. This measure tracks emergency department visits for respiratory illness, which can have different causes. It is not a count of flu cases.
| State | Overall respiratory illness | Typical flu A wastewater level |
|---|---|---|
| California | Very low | Moderate |
| Texas | Low | Moderate |
| New York | Very low | Very low |

These counts cover reporting sites, not people or cases. The California, Texas and New York data queries show the site counts for that week. A typical site does not describe every community in a state. Check your state and county in Illness for a more local view.
What does a flu wastewater reading mean?
Wastewater testing looks for traces of flu A in sewage. A site's level compares the amount detected with its own historical readings. The scale runs from very low to very high. A rise can signal a change in community activity, but it does not say who is sick or how likely any person is to get sick.
The flu measure detects influenza A, not every type of influenza. Material in wastewater can also come from animals or animal products. See the respiratory illness data for the measures and their limits.
What about COVID and RSV?
COVID and RSV are also tracked in wastewater. Their readings can differ from flu A readings in the same area. Check Illness for current local results; these are separate virus readings, not diagnoses.
Is stomach flu the same as flu?
No. Influenza is a respiratory illness. What people call stomach flu is gastroenteritis, an illness that affects the stomach and intestines and can have different causes. The health guidance on viral gastroenteritis explains its symptoms and causes.
How can I check my county?
Open Illness, choose a state and add a county to see available wastewater sites serving it. Coverage varies, so a missing site or reading is not proof that a virus is absent. For symptoms, testing or treatment, contact a clinician; this information is not a diagnosis. Care can help you look for care options.
